Vidiots is moving forward with plans to open in place of the former 90-year-old Eagle Theatre, at 4880 Eagle Rock Boulevard (most recently home to a church).
Executive Director Maggie Mackay late last week submitted a Conditional Use Beverage application to the City of Los Angeles seeking the necessary approvals to sell beer and wine at Vidiots.
It’s the first known permit filing for the project which was announced in September 2019.
With the filing, a fall 2020 debut as nonprofit Vidiots at the Eagle is on track.
“Vidiots relaunching on the cusp of our 35th birthday is a triumph for Los Angeles film history and cements the legacy of Vidiots Founders Patty Polinger and Cathy Tauber as innovators in L.A. film culture,” Mackay said at the time of the announcement.
“Bringing the Eagle Theatre back and providing L.A. with a long-needed new film space is thrilling. We’re deeply grateful for our valued programming partners present and future, our expert advisors, and especially our First-In Founding Members whose generosity and passionate belief in our mission have made this relaunch possible. Vidiots at the Eagle is a community space created by and for film lovers and filmmakers. Vidiots’ new 10,672-square-foot home, a rebirth of the original 32-year-old Santa Monica outpost that closed in early-2017, will include a 271-seat theatre and retail space sure to please movie lovers.
Vidiots’ theatre, used to screen films and host cinema-related events, would operate Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., Friday from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
There will be a second, smaller screening and event space with approximately 50 seats with DCP projection for workshops and receptions.
The retail store, sporting a 50,000-plus collection of rental DVDs and Blueray, would be open Monday through Friday, from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
