After serving Venice for 42 years, The Rose has gone dark for an undisclosed period of time, Eater LA on Monday first reported. Ownership of the popular restaurant, at 220 Rose Ave., announced the news over the weekend on social media, citing the “current state of draconian measures” by local governments, namely the recent ban on outdoor dining.

“After tonight’s service here at The Rose Venice, we will be taking a much-needed break,” according to the Instagram post on Sunday. “The current state of draconian measures imposed on restaurants by the City of Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti, and Governer Gavin Newsom, have made it infeasible for us to operate during these trying times.”

The Rose Venice will go on “hiatus for the next few weeks” and return in 2021 at an undetermined day in time. Owners will use the downtime to “polish” up The Rose. “The coffee will be hot, the veggies will be fresh, and the smiles (and hopefully hugs) will be long when we return.”
