Described by the Miami New Times as a Coral Gables “institution for decades,” longtime deli and bagel shop Bagel Emporium & Grille is moving to a new location. After a buyout, the building the bagel shop has called home for half a century will be demolished to make way for student housing.

Well, nearly half a century. As it turns out, Bagel Emporium, founded in 1975, will celebrate its fiftieth birthday in a brand new home, at 4000 Ponce, the retail and office development based at 4000 Ponce de Leon.

Still, even if the move doesn’t come under the most auspicious conditions, the new space is a big upgrade.

“It’s a great opportunity,” owner David Strawderman told What Now on Wednesday. “The area has the density, the traffic. It’s vibrant with all the businesses and offices there, and it’s going to be twice the size of what we have.”

The new location will feature a full bar and will also be serving dinner after 4 p.m. Strawderman says the move is expected in Q1 of 2025, before Easter and Passover.

“We have had a very positive reaction,” Strawderman said. “So we’re excited. We’ve been here 50 years, and now we’re hoping for at least 25 over there.”
