Bored Cuban, the trendy and whimsical take on Cuban restaurants, is opening another location.
The new spot is located at 5812 Sunset Drive in South Miami. Construction has started, and the restaurant will open in 2026.
Eric Castellanos, owner of Miami staple Latin Cafe 2000, wanted to compliment his classic restaurant with one that takes on a creative approach to Cuban food. Castellanos tells What Now Miami that in 2024, he was offered to take over a spot next to one of his Latin Cafes. Needing to figure out a completely new concept, he drew inspiration from a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT he purchased depicting an ape wearing a guayabera and smoking a cigar. Castellanos said that simian was the catalyst for a restaurant that would take a modern, artistic approach to classic Cuban dishes.
Bored Cuban soon became popular as a restaurant that bridges the gap between old-school Miami and the modern city it has become through food, offering a mashup of Cuban favorites and fun fare such as Cuban pop tarts, empanadas, Cuban sandwiches, and acai bowls in a colorful setting. The original opened on LeJune Road, close to Miami International Airport and quickly grew in popularity. A second popped at Brickell’s Latin Cafe location. Now a third is set to open this spring.
Castellanos is taking over the former Sushi Maki space in South Miami after owner Abe Ng decided he had two locations too close together. “South Miami is a long term play,” says Castellanos, adding that the neighborhood is undergoing significant renovations including new multi-use complexes.
When it opens, the South Miami location will offer some traditional Cuban platters, like lechon, in addition to Bored Cuban’s popular bowls, flatbreads, and sandwiches. “You have your choice, depending on what your mood is.”
