This week, the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority announced the official groundbreaking of Sweetwaters, “a full-service restaurant that will serve as a centerpiece of the reimagined Huizenga Park, which is slated to reopen in early 2026.”

Behind Sweetwaters is Specialty Restaurants Corporation, the hospitality group known for the Rusty Pelican and other restaurants. It promises “a refined dining experience that captures the energy of Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Guests can expect bold flavors, attentive service, and a design that reflects the city’s lively riverfront character,” says a press release.

Sweetwaters will comprise 6,140 square feet of interior dining space, plus 3,500 square feet of outdoor dining space, including a riverfront patio and a terrace facing the park.

“Seeing Sweetwaters take shape in Huizenga Park, a place where Fort Lauderdale’s riverfront energy truly comes alive, is incredibly rewarding,” said John Tallichet, President & CEO of Specialty Restaurants Corporation. “Our vision is to create a dining experience that feels effortless and inviting, where every detail – from the design to the views to the cuisine – complements the park’s spirit, creating a place where people naturally want to gather.”

What Now reached out to John Tallichet on Monday to ask about the anticipated menu at Sweetwaters. Tallichet was not immediately available for comment.
