Grupo Bakan, the hospitality group behind both Bakan, which has locations in Wynwood and in Madrid, and Coral Gables’ Talavera Cocina Mexicana, has launched a new restaurant in Coconut Grove. KoKo by Bakan is now serving up traditional Mexican cuisine at 2856 Tigertail Ave.
“We wanted to shake up the Grove’s culinary options with something completely different,” said Grupo Bakan partner Lalo Durazo in recent coverage by the South Florida Business Journal. “We were inspired by traditional recipes, as well as the hidden gems that can only be found in Mexican markets and pueblos, allowing us to venture into cultural flavors that have been passed down for generations.”
The menu emphasizes house-made traditional tortillas, the kitchen’s wood-fired grill and rotisserie, and a wide range (more than 400 different varieties) of tequilas and mezcals.
“We make our tortillas daily from scratch using imported criollo corn from Oaxaca. We don’t fry our chips, we toast them over cherry wood fire,” reads the restaurant’s website. “We follow the traditional recipes of the classics as well as the hidden gems found only in the markets and pueblos.”
The South Florida Business Journal adds that Grupo Bakan is currently at work on another project in Bal Harbour. What Now reached out to Lalo Durazo on Thursday to inquire about this project. Durazo was not immediately available for comment.
