Comète Bake Shop, a Japanese-inspired bakery located at 4484 Rue Fabre in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood, temporarily closed due to an accidental fire that occurred on June 8.

Founded by Kenji and Sayaka Kobayashi, a couple with roots in Tokyo and Paris, the bakery blends classic French baking techniques with Japanese sensibilities. Unfortunately, the beloved Comète Bake Shop suffered a fire earlier this month, forcing the couple to temporarily close the store, first reported by Silo 57. The owners announced the closure on their social media, stating they would need time to recover and rebuild. They expressed their commitment to reopening and thanked their customers for their support.

“Dear customers, We have a very important announcement today,” according to the announcement from earlier this month. “It breaks my heart to tell you, but due to an accidental fire last night, Comète will be temporarily closed. We will definitely be back! Let us keep you updated on the reopening date. Thank you for your continuous support. We are encouraged by the warm words of our neighbors, and we are so lucky to have such kind neighbors like you.”

Comète Bake Shop serves up a tasty mix of Japanese flavors with a unique twist. Their menu features favorites like curry pan, melon pan filled with homemade cranberry jam, and cardamom-miso viennoiseries. You’ll also find chocolate-yuzu croissants and matcha and black sesame cookies. They offer hand-drip coffee and curated pastry boxes you can preorder. Known for using quality ingredients and creative recipes, Comète Bake Shop has quickly become a local favorite, with many eagerly looking forward to its reopening and the return of its distinctive treats to Montreal’s food scene. A timeline for the reopening has yet to be announced.
