Gitanes Burger, known locally as Gburger, is closing its Elgin Street location after 10 years and relocating to a new home on Wellington Street West at 1365 Wellington St. W.

After operating for ten years in downtown Ottawa, the restaurant is closing its original space and relocating to the former home of John’s Family Diner, according to an announcement made on social media, which the Ottawa Business Journal first reported. Renovations are underway, with plans to reopen later this summer. The move is part of a shift in the restaurant’s business model. The Elgin Street space was initially designed to accommodate multiple ventures, but it no longer meets the current needs of the burger-focused concept.

The lease at the Elgin location is ending, making this a practical time to relocate. The new location will support a more efficient service style. Plans include counter ordering, takeout options, and seating designed to serve a broader range of customers. The restaurant will continue to offer beverages, including alcoholic drinks, but with a simplified format. A small area will also be set up for families with children.

The decision to move follows several years of operational changes. The Elgin location faced challenges in recent years due to nearby construction, the pandemic, and building maintenance issues. These factors led the business to focus more heavily on its burger concept, which gained popularity over time. The new space is intended to support the brand’s long-term goals. It offers a more suitable layout for the restaurant’s current approach and customer base. By relocating, Gitanes Burger aims to continue its growth in an environment that better aligns with its direction.

“Ten years at the corner of Elgin and Gladstone, this was a home away from home for so many of us over the years,” according to the company’s announcement on social media. “The friendships, relationships, and memories will last forever, but unfortunately, we won’t be building any new ones at 380Elgin. Our time here has come to an end, and this will be the last week of service for Gburger. We’ll be moving our operation to Wellington West in the former Johns Diner space. We can’t wait to build new memories with you there, but feel free to come visit us at Elgin this week. Adios Amigos!”
