Paninaro, a local Ottawa-based sandwich shop, is set to open a second location in Ottawa at 82 O’Connor Street.
The company’s second location is currently under construction, according to a recent social media post. It’s unclear when this site will open. The expansion comes as the brand continues to build a loyal following with its unique take on Italian-style sandwiches, inspired by the Paninaro subculture that thrived in Milan during the 1980s. The original Paninaro has become known as Ottawa’s hidden gem for Schiacciata sandwiches, a type of Italian flatbread that serves as the foundation for their carefully crafted offerings.
Each sandwich is meticulously handcrafted to order by skilled artisans in a dedicated kitchen, emphasizing fresh, high-quality ingredients. What sets Paninaro apart is its commitment to in-house preparation; every sauce and topping is made from scratch to bring authentic, bold flavours to every bite, offering customers a genuine taste of Milanese street food culture. Paninaro’s menu features a variety of distinctive sandwiches served on freshly baked Schiacciata bread.
Signature items include the Moda Mortadella, topped with Mortadella, Stracciatella, and Pistachio Cream, and the Milano Mingle, which combines Salami, Pecorino Cream, and Spicy Eggplant. Another fan favorite is the Porchetta Paninaro, featuring tender Porchetta, Fior Di Latte cheese, and a spicy eggplant spread. For those with a sweet tooth, Paninaro also offers delicious desserts such as The Notturno Nutella sandwich, made with Nutella, Mascarpone, and Pistachio Crumb, as well as traditional cannoli filled with cinnamon ricotta cream.
With the new location, Paninaro aims to bring its handcrafted sandwiches and unique cultural vibe to a wider audience in Ottawa. The addition of this second spot not only reflects the brand’s growing popularity but also provides another destination for locals seeking a fresh, authentic Italian sandwich experience in the city’s vibrant culinary scene.
