According to recent permits, a new cafe will become an exciting addition to Centennial Park’s projected $10 million renovation plan. Bids for construction are expected to begin in early 2024 with an exact opening for the cafe forthcoming.
The concept for the non-profit cafe comes as a collaboration between the Centennial Park Conservancy and Metro Nashville Parks Department wanting to utilize a piece of history that has gone widely unused. As it stands, the name Croque Cafe is pending approval from the Metro Parks Board.
The space for the new cafe will be about 1,000 square feet with a total of 100 seats, including a large outdoor seating area and about 14 indoor seats. The idea is to provide a gathering spot for parkgoers who might be walking, running, or biking and are in need of a quality spot to take a break and grab concessions. The space will combine the feel of a cafe and coffee shop, offering both breakfast and lunch.
What Now Nashville spoke with John Tumminello, President of the Centennial Park Conservancy, about the plans in store for the cafe.
“When we evaluate the needs of the park, something that tends to come up is a need for concessions. Within the footprint of the park is this beautiful mid-century building that has been sitting empty. Metro Parks and The Conservancy aim to provide this cafe as a service to parkgoers as well as to put money raised back into the park through beautification efforts,” Tumminello said.
In terms of what the menu might look like, Tumminello expressed that the Conservancy hopes to bring an elevated yet approachable concept to parkgoers. Instead of serving snacky fried foods, think of healthy yet casual options to easily eat on the go.
“Where we’re at in our initial thought process for what might be served includes some breakfast items like pastries, coffee and tea, sandwiches, paninis, salads, and options that are easy to enjoy while sitting in a park. Smoothies and juices are also being considered, as well as ice cream in the warmer months for the kids to enjoy. Maybe some soups in the cooler months,” Tumminello added.
The Conservancy also expects to use the area to host events like acoustic live music and other opportunities to activate the space.
“Engaging the community in this beautiful park and its surroundings is our goal,” Tumminello explained.
