A new restaurant is coming to the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans. What was once a cantina and a club will now be the home of a new restaurant named after the very street it’s located on, 2901 Bar and Lounge at 2901 Tulane Ave. The business filed for the building permit this month.
For six years, Big Tasty ran as a 24-hour cantina and Latin restaurant before recently closing. Before there was a Big Tasty, the space was originally used as a Honduran restaurant named Talamar, under the ownership of the Olviedo family, who joined the growing list of Latin American cuisine spots opening in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Mother-daughter duo Elisabeth and Daisy Olviedo ran Talamar, as reported in a 2012 article by WWNO Public Radio for New Orleans. Homestyle Honduran foods sold at the restaurant ranged from classic fried plantains served with aderezo sauce to handmade tortillas. The clientele of both businesses remained centered on the Latino community in the neighborhood.
Redesigning the 1,920-square-foot space for 2901 Bar and Lounge includes partitioning off the kitchen from the bar to provide a bigger kitchen space. What Now New Orleans tried to reach the new business owner, Renaldo Thomas, for comment about the up-and-coming restaurant but the owner was unavailable. This article will be updated as more information becomes available about the developing 2901 Bar and Lounge.
