Popular Italian restaurant Avo will shut down on December 23 after a decade on Magazine Street. The eatery draws on its Sicilian heritage and is known for its Italian dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.
Sicilian-Inspired Italian Restaurant Avo Set to Close in December
Avo is a regional Italian dining spot opened by Chef Nick Lama. A New Orleans native and third-generation Sicilian, Chef Lama brought authentic Italian cuisine to the neighborhood.
The restaurant, however, decided to bid farewell after ten years of operation. In a social media post, Avo notified that it will close down on December 23. The restaurant said it was a difficult decision.
“After 10 memorable years, we will be closing our doors on Tuesday, December 23. This decision wasn’t easy, but it comes with deep gratitude for everyone who has dined with us, celebrated with us, and supported us along the way,” the post read.

The restaurant thanked the guests, team, and the community who had helped run the place.
“To our guests, our team, and our community, thank you for making this place so special. We hope you’ll visit us over the next week as we share our final chapter together,” it concluded.
Avo Inspired by Family’s Recipes

The name Avo was derived from the Italian word ‘grandfather’ or ‘ancestor’. The official website notes that the name reflects a personal significance for the restaurant. The menu draws from the chef Lama’s family recipes but is served through a fresh lens.
Some of the popular menu items are meatballs and lasagna, along with an inventive take on Grilled Octopus. The restaurant uses ingredients that are Southern-grown and locally sourced.
As Avo prepares to serve guests for the final time this month, its closure marks the end of a notable chapter in Magazine Street’s Italian dining scene.
