Flynn McGarry, the former Celebrity Teen Chef turned Regular Celebrity Chef, has got big plans under his apron.
As the chief owner and operator of Gem NYC, the 23-year old chef has been taking the city by storm since opening Gem in 2016 (when he was only 19 years old). Flynn is currently one of the biggest names in the industry at the moment, having begun his career through self-teaching as a child. Reading through cookbooks like Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry Cookbook and watching guides on YouTube and various food blogs, McGarry learned everything he needed to know to achieve his dream of becoming a chef.
At only 12 years old, Flynn began his own dining club called Eureka, and attracted talented chefs from across the industry to come and try out his new dishes at $160-a-head. From there, the combination of his youth and talent turned him into a culinary celebrity, and soon he was able to open up his first pop-up restaurant in New York, where he regularly served a staggering 14-course tasting menu.
In 2018, Flynn finally opened up Gem as his first permeant restaurant. Designed as a combination café/dining club, Gem transforms from a casual restaurant during the day, to a seasonal a-la carte menu at night that serves a rotating selection of curated dishes. Reservation only, Gem is a prestigious experience from one of the brightest young chefs working today.
Now, Flynn and his team are getting ready to open up a second restaurant, tentatively called Gem.Wine, at 297 Broome Street. Envisioned as a seasonal wine bar, the new bar will serve specially sourced wines, beer, and cider according to Flynn’s design. The new bar will be the perfect compliment to Gem’s prestigious reputation, and with a visionary like Flynn McGarry at the helm, it’s bound to be an unmissable experience.
