Mustard Indian Eatery is an Indian eatery featuring regional specialties and classic Indian dishes. Mustard Indian Eatery opened on May 7th on Fredrick Douglass Blvd. in Harlem, this new venture comes from Owner Ruhel Amin, whose career spans fashion career at Steve Madden to venturing into the restaurant scene with the opening of Mumbai Masala in Harlem (2017), River Thai & Beyond in Harlem (2019), Masti Indian Grill & Chaat Bar in Williamsburg (2020), and Oh! Calcutta in LIC (2024).

Ruhel has appointed chefs Sharmeen Rahman and Lisha Khondokar, who blend their shared passion for homestyle cooking with their culinary expertise. Both chefs have been integral to Ruhel’s culinary team since the launch of his restaurant career. They will bring their creative flair and deep understanding of traditional Indian recipes to Mustard Indian Cuisine.

Chef Sharmeen, known for her fervent love of chutneys, relishes, and curries, has dedicated years to mastering these elements. She constantly explores innovative ways to present her dishes; her commitment to traditional Indian classics is evident in her vibrant and thoughtful creations for Mustard. She will be presenting dishes such as Murgh Chettinad, chicken curry from the house of Chettiars, and Mughlai Gosht, a classic lamb dish with cashew, bay leaf, and cardamom.

Chef Lisha learned how to cook from her mother and aunts and will bring time-tested recipes from generations. She will create vegan and vegetarian options, such as Baigan Baghara, eggplant, peanut, sesame, and tamarind, as well as Methi Mutter Malai Paneer, green peas, fenugreek, cream, and tomato sauce. Each dish reflects her dedication to bringing a taste of home and a spark of innovation to the table.

Mustard is light and inviting, designed with bright white subway tiles accented by refreshing mint green walls and ceiling. A mural of Indian spices and vintage sepia-tone photographs of India adds warmth and character to the dining room. Large street-facing windows flood the space with natural light and offer views of the neighborhood. Toward the back, an open kitchen provides a glimpse of chefs at work, tending to the tandoori oven and preparing dishes in full view. The dining area features light wooden tables, neatly set with cloth napkins and sleek white chairs. The interior is cozy and welcoming, as is the service. Owner Ruhel firmly believes that customers should be treated like guests. In his view, warm hospitality is inseparable from the cuisine and is a key part of the dining experience.
