For the past decade, New York’s Financial District has experienced a serious renaissance. Once the barren home of towers of monolithic office space, recent developments have seen the neighborhood transformed into something much more accessible. Especially today in our post-pandemic world, changing work cultures are radically transforming the Financial District and incentivizing more people than ever before to come and visit the iconic neighborhood.
Now, one of New York’s most expansive food markets is plotting a massive new expansion into the district. Urbanspace was founded in 1972 in London, and moved to New York in 1993 under the leadership of Elden Scott. Dedicated to providing cities with vibrant new gathering places and markets, Urbanspace has brought to life some of New York’s most popular markets. Even if you don’t know Urbanspace directly, you’ve definitely witnessed their Holiday Markets in Union Square, Central Park, and Bryant Park. In fact, the Bryant Park Holiday market is actually the largest event in North America, averaging over four million visitors during their two month operation.
Beyond their wildly popular outdoor markets, Urbanspace also operates a number of indoor food halls across Manhattan. Bringing together some of the best food vendors that can be found in the city and uniting them all under one roof, Urbanspace has helped popularize a plethora of iconic New York restaurants like Lolo’s Seafood Shack, Eisenberg’s, and Roberta’s.
Urbanspace’s latest project will see the company developing a brand new food hall at 100 Pearl Street. Featuring over 12,000 square feet of space and massive 21 foot high ceilings, the new space is expansive enough to host 16 different vendors. While the vendors have not been finalized yet, the space is a massive boon for the neighborhood that will introduce an abundance of brand new restaurants to one of the city’s most populous districts.
Located on the ground floor of a 29-story office building, the 100 Pearl Street Urbanspace is well-positioned to attract plenty of customers. Directly across the street from 55 Water Street, New York’s largest office building, the location is poised to offer tourists and workers alike some of the best food they can find in the neighborhood. Slated for a Spring 2022 opening, Urbanspace is also planning on opening three other spaces this year, one in Union Square, another in Chicago, and another in Downtown Los Angeles.
