Chipotle Mexican Grill announced on Tuesday that Jason Kidd will become its new Chief Operating Officer. Jack Hartung who is currently serving as President and Chief Strategy Officer for Chipotle, has announced retirement plans. Together, these shifts mark a significant leadership change at the top levels of the company.

Leadership Transition Underway at Chipotle
Jason Kidd will officially take up the COO position at Chipotle on May 19 and will be entrusted with managing the operations throughout its 3,800-plus locations. Working from the company’s headquarters in Newport Beach, he will be reporting directly to its CEO, Scott Boatwright.
Jack Hartung, who has been with Chipotle since 2002, will be stepping down from his current role on June 1. During his 20-plus years in the company, he held top-level positions such as chief financial and administrative officer before becoming the President.
Curt Garner, Chief Customer and Technology Officer, will take on expanded responsibilities as Hartung transitions and will be overseeing the supply chain. Additionally, Chris Brandt, Chief Brand Officer, will lead the culinary team focused on menu and ingredient development.
Kidd Comes From Taco Bell, States His Vision for Chipotle
Jason Kidd is moving from the role of global COO for Taco Bell to join Chipotle. Other highlights of his illustrious career include his experience as the president of Hearing Lab Technology, LLC, and COO of 99 Cents Only Stores. Kidd also held leadership roles in operations during his two-decade tenure at Sam’s Club.
Speaking about his new job, Kidd said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to join Chipotle’s world-class leadership team and look forward to further enhancing experiences for our team members and guests.” Stating his vision for the company, he said, “Chipotle’s current efforts to build a guest obsessed culture and modernize the back of house are exciting, and I believe there’s tremendous growth ahead for this incredible brand.”
CEO Sam Boatwright shared his thoughts about his company’s new hire. He said that Kidd brings a track record of proven accomplishments and a wealth of knowledge that will help support its 130,000 team members in delivering exceptional hospitality to guests. He also stated that Kidd’s extensive operational experience in large-scale, multi-unit retail would provide a strong foundation and introduce new strategic thinking to the executive team.
Hartung to Remain A Senior Advisor for Chipotle
Jack Hartung will remain with Chipotle as a Senior Advisor until early March 2026, following his departure from the role of President and Chief Strategy Officer on June 1, 2025. Hartung originally planned to retire in March 2025. However, as per the announcement on Tuesday, he will be with the company for another year, in the advisory position.
Hartung has been working with Boatwright and chief financial officer Adam Rymer, after they joined the company nine months ago. He has postponed his retirement to guide the new leadership as the company undergoes major changes at the highest levels.
Hartung expressed confidence in the company’s leadership and strategic direction, stating that he believes Chipotle has the right team and approach in place to deliver value to guests, employees, and shareholders.
Reflecting on his tenure, he noted that the company had opened over 3,700 restaurants across seven countries and expressed confidence in its growth potential. He called it the honor of a lifetime to serve a company that pioneered a new dining category and made real food more accessible. Hartung added that he looks forward to seeing Chipotle continue its mission to “Cultivate a Better World.”
Boatwright, in a statement, said, “Jack’s contributions to Chipotle over nearly three decades are immeasurable, and I’m extremely grateful for his leadership, guidance and friendship.” He also said, “Jack’s selfless decision to delay his retirement and aid the organization through our leadership transition will never be forgotten, and I extend my sincerest gratitude for the instrumental role he played in ensuring Chipotle always delivered on its purpose.”
