The Louisiana-based meat manufacturer, Bourgeois Smokehouse, has recalled its ready-to-eat smoked andouille sausage products that were produced and sold earlier this month. The recall followed routine testing by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which detected the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially harmful bacterium.
The FSIS has posted the recall announcement on its official website. The agency noted that the affected product may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.
Highlights
- A recall has been issued for the Bourgeois Smokehouse Ready-To-Eat Smoked Andouille Sausage product that was produced on May 12.
- The product was sold through 10 Rouses Markets in three states, with Louisiana having the most of the affected stores.
- Customers who may have the product are urged not to consume it and to dispose of it.
Bourgeois Smokehouse Recalls 100 Pounds of One of Its Sausage Products
About 100 pounds of Bourgeois Smokehouse’s ready-to-eat (RTE) smoked andouille sausage products, produced on May 12, 2025, are subject to the contamination. The products were available to purchase by May 13, 2025, at stores across three states.
The product is contaminated with an organism called Listeria monocytogenes. FSIS has classified the contamination as Class I, which is “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
The FSIS announcement regarding the recall said that, “there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.”
No Clear Identifying Markers: How to Identify the Contaminated Product?
The products in question were weighed, wrapped, and labeled directly in the store when purchased. As a result, they do not have an establishment number or the USDA mark of inspection on them.
Due to the absence of distinct identifying markers, customers must use the place of purchase as the primary means of identifying the product.
Product Sold Through Rouses Market in Three States
The recalled product was distributed to 10 Rouses Market locations across three states. Louisiana accounts for the majority, with eight affected stores. The remaining two locations are in Mississippi and Alabama, respectively.
The FSIS has released a list of retail locations that received the product. Customers who purchased the product on or after May 13 from any of these stores are advised to exercise caution.
What Should Affected Consumers Do?
Any customer who may be in possession of the Bourgeois Smokehouse’s contaminated smoked andouille sausage products must not consume them. They must immediately throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.
In case a customer or anyone in their household has already consumed the product, they must be aware of any symptoms of infection from the bacteria. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, and a stiff neck, as well as confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. In some cases, these symptoms may be preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal issues.
Persons in the higher-risk categories – newborns, pregnant women, older adults, and persons with weakened immune systems – are more at risk of a serious infection. If flu-like symptoms arise in such individuals within two months after consuming the contaminated food, they should contact a healthcare provider. Make sure to inform the provider about having eaten the contaminated food.
