Time Out Market, a renowned food hall, has announced the closure of two of its most prominent locations in Chicago and Boston. Both locations will close on Friday, January 23, 2026. Operating since 2019, the food and beverage hall is closing after seven years due to slow foot traffic.
Chicago and Boston Locations to Close Amid Slowing Business
Local favorites, Time Out Market in Chicago’s historic Fulton Market District and Boston’s Fenway neighborhood, are permanently closing this month. Social media posts from both locations indicate that Time Out Market’s last day will be January 23.
The team behind Time Out Market Chicago wrote, “Time Out Market opened in 2019 to gather Chicago’s most exciting food and drink talents under one roof.” They added that since then, “it’s been an honor to showcase the city’s extraordinary chefs, bartenders, creators, and cultural voices, host unforgettable events, and welcome locals and visitors from around the globe.”
The Chicago location spans 50,000 square feet and features 15 eateries, three bars, and a rooftop terrace.
“Time Out began gathering Boston’s most exciting food and drink talents under one roof back in 2017, and the market officially opened its doors in 2019,” said the team behind Boston’s Time Out Market. Boston’s location covers 27,000 sq. ft. and features 15 eateries and two bars, along with a large patio. Both locations also feature a video installation wall showcasing the best food, drinks, and cultural highlights from the markets.
In an official Time Out report, Michael Marlay, CEO of Time Out Market, stated that both the Chicago and Boston locations have largely recovered from post-pandemic challenges. He added, “However, footfall until today remains inconsistent in the area due to ongoing hybrid working, and in addition, operating costs have increased—all of which prevents consistent profitability.”
Community Shares Emotional Reactions on Social Media
As news of the closures spread on social media, local communities in Chicago and Boston expressed surprise and disappointment. Several fans shared heartfelt messages in response to the announcement.
One customer wrote, “Thank you for being my favorite go-to study spot. Time Out Boston will forever be in my memories.” Another added, “We loved dining at Time Out Market. A fun concept and great atmosphere. Thanks for the memories.”
As the food industry continues to evolve, market shifts are creating new challenges. The closure of Time Out Market in Boston and Chicago marks the end of an era for the local dining scenes in both cities.
