The German grocery giant shared its plans to expand in 2025 and beyond. Aldi is working to come up with 225 new outlets this year. This development is part of the discount grocery player’s five-year growth schedule launched in 2023. Through this initiative, Aldi envisions adding a total of 800 shops by 2028.

As of now, the grocery store chain has more than 2,400 stores throughout the US, and 120 of these outlets were opened in 2024. With this, it became the country’s third-largest grocery retailer.

The announcement of adding 225 more shops this year propels Aldi’s progress towards having the maximum number of new stores in one year during its five-decade run in the U.S.

Growing Footprints in the Western U.S.

Other than its usual markets, the discount grocery giant made its debut in the Las Vegas area with two new outlets. Aldi cited its plans to strengthen its position in the Western US when choosing the new location. It plans to open a third Las Vegas store in May and a fourth by the end of this year.

The grocery retailer’s widening horizon in the Western U.S., along with the Midwest and Northeast, will guide its expansion plans.

Aldi’s Strategic Growth Post-Acquisition Deal with Southeastern Grocers

In 2024, the longtime grocery chain giant made an acquisition deal with Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys. With this, it is driven to expand in the Southeast by converting about 220 Southeastern Grocers locations into Aldi stores by 2027.

It should be noted that out of the selected locations, Aldi will sell 170 to a consortium that includes private investors and C&S Wholesale Grocers.

Aldi’s consistent growth in achieving its target of 800 stores by 2028 is pushing its drive to become an affordable grocery store for US households.
