HNI Corporation, a major U.S. manufacturer, has announced plans to restructure and consolidate parts of its manufacturing operations. The company plans to close its Wayland, New York, manufacturing facility in 2027, impacting approximately 135 jobs.

Consolidation of Production Network

HNI Corporation has announced plans to close its manufacturing facility in Wayland, New York, in 2027 as part of a broader consolidation of its production network. The company will gradually shift production from Wayland to other North American facilities.

HNI stated that the move will not affect its product lineup. Products currently manufactured at the Wayland plant will continue to be produced at other HNI facilities. The Gunlocke brand will remain part of HNI’s portfolio following the closure.

“Closing the facility is a difficult decision given the hard work and expertise of the Wayland team. We are grateful for our Wayland members’ dedication and craftsmanship, and we are committed to providing support and resources throughout the transition,” said Brandon Bullock, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at HNI.

Projected Financial Impact

In a company report, HNI estimates that the consolidation will generate annual cost savings of approximately $7.5 million to $8.0 million once fully implemented.

The company further expects to record pre-tax charges of about $14.9 million across 2026 and 2027 related to the closure. This includes both cash and non-cash expenses; most of these charges are expected to be recognized in 2026.

The decision will also result in the elimination of approximately 135 positions at the Wayland facility. HNI said it plans to provide support and transition resources to affected employees.

Bullock stated, “We are announcing the consolidation a year in advance as part of our commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for our members and our customers.”

The move is part of HNI’s broader effort to streamline its manufacturing operations. It follows the integration of Kimball International, which is expected to contribute to long-term cost efficiencies.
