Walmart is broadening its drone delivery operations, positioning aerial drop-offs as a core part of its delivery strategy. Through a partnership with Alphabet-backed drone delivery company Wing, Walmart aims to expand the service nationwide.

Walmart, Wing to Operate Over 270 Delivery Locations

According to Wing, drone delivery will expand to more than 150 Walmart stores by 2027. The aerial delivery will be available to over 40 million American households. The companies plan to operate more than 270 delivery locations, spanning markets from Los Angeles to Miami.

The company said that the expansion will build on the success of its current operations. Drone delivery has gained traction in markets such as the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex and Metro Atlanta. The most active customers place orders at least three times a week, Wing said.

“Drone delivery plays an important role in our ability to deliver what customers want, exactly when they want it. Whether it’s a last-minute ingredient for dinner, a must-have charger for a phone, or a late-night essential for a busy family, the strong adoption we’ve seen confirms that this is the future of convenience,” said Greg Cathey, Senior Vice President of Digital Fulfillment Transformation at Walmart.

Walmart, Wing Expand Drone Delivery in Major Markets

The service areas for Wing and Walmart will cover key metropolitan areas like St. Louis, Miami, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati. The company will announce additional spots in the next few months.

The expansion builds on previously announced markets, including Charlotte, Houston, and Orlando. The companies will begin their operations in Houston on January 15.

The nationwide expansion will help Walmart meet customer demand much more quickly. “By expanding drone delivery to new major metro areas, we are helping more customers solve their last-minute needs faster than ever before,” Cathey added.

Drone Delivery’s Reliability

The expansion will help the company go beyond steady growth. It will build on its established service reliability and quick delivery.

“We’ve spent years building our technology to ensure that when you realize you’re out of eggs or need over-the-counter medicine, the solution is just a few taps away, seamlessly integrated into existing store operations,” said Adam Woodworth, Wing CEO.

“We believe even the smallest package deserves the speed and reliability of a great delivery service. Working with Walmart has allowed us to prove that delivering these critical, everyday items in minutes makes a significant difference for families. We are proud to bring that capability to more communities across the country,” he added.

Walmart and Wing’s partnership signals a shift toward broader, commercial-scale drone delivery in the U.S.
