Aquastar Corp is recalling several shrimp products after a potential radioactive contamination was detected, affecting stores across 31 U.S. states. The FDA is investigating frozen shrimp from an Indonesian supplier PT. Bahari Makmu Sejati. While no illnesses have been reported, the FDA urges consumers to dispose or return the affected shrimp.
Shrimp Products Recall Issued Due to Possible Contamination
A public warning was made against the sale, purchase, and consumption of shrimp products sold under the brand names Aquastar and Kroger. The FDA says the shrimp may be contaminated with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, possibly introduced during processing or storage.
The affected shrimp was sold across 31 states at Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foodsco, and Fred Meyer. Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C, King Soopers, Kroger, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay Less Supermarkets, Pick n’ Save, Ralphs, Smith’s, and QFC sold the products. The shrimp products were sold in these places between June 12, 2025, and September 17, 2025.
The FDA has been actively investigating shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by PT. Bahari Makmu Sejati. Although no contaminated shrimp has reached U.S. stores, the FDA is advising shoppers to remain cautious.
Long-term exposure to Cesium-137 can increase cancer risk and harm DNA. While traces of this man-made isotope exist in some environments, the recall focuses on potentially contaminated shrimp sold in stores.
