The matter came to the attention of the FDA when several illness reports were made, leading to the recall. The contamination involves Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness. In rare cases, it can also enter the bloodstream and lead to arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

Consumers who purchased bulk-packed cartons from foodservice distributors are advised to return them for a refund or safely discard them.
