According to a new survey, Costco was among several grocery chains that outperformed Walmart, which was used as the pricing benchmark. The survey from Consumer Reports highlights price differences among major grocery chains across the United States.
Costco Overtakes Walmart as Cheapest Grocery Retailer
Consumer Reports is an independent nonprofit organization known for its product testing and consumer research. It recently published an article ranking the most and least expensive supermarkets in the United States.
The report named Costco Wholesale as the most affordable option among the chains surveyed.
Costco’s bulk-buying model and membership structure allow it to offer more affordable prices. The retailer provides everyday essentials, office and school supplies, and a great variety of products.
The report found that shoppers buying a typical basket of goods at Costco paid significantly less than those shopping at Walmart.
At Costco, the average grocery basket was about 21.4 percent cheaper than at Walmart, followed by BJ’s Wholesale Club, where prices were roughly 21 percent lower than Walmart’s.
Whole Foods Tops List of Most Expensive Grocery Stores
At the other end of the report, Whole Foods Market has ranked as the most expensive grocery chain. The supermarket chain provides more premium products, specialty brands, and organic selections. Thus, it often comes with higher price tags, which may explain part of the gap.
While some shoppers are willing to pay more for selection and quality, the difference in overall cost was substantial in the comparison.
Whole Foods Market chain prices were nearly 40 percent higher than Walmart’s. Trader Joe’s was also pricier, with costs about 24 percent higher than Walmart.
The report used Walmart as the baseline and compared prices with major chains like Trader Joe’s, Costco, Aldi, and Target. The results show a clear gap between the cheapest (Costco) and most expensive (Whole Foods Market) grocery stores.
