Rebecca Leon and her mother, Llida Rodriguez-Leon, are opening Breakfast in Havana, a counter-service breakfast spot at 2251 W New Haven Ave, next to Publix. This is their first foray into restaurant ownership, but they will be drawing on inspiration from their Cuban heritage and experience working in other Cuban restaurants. Llida is also a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu culinary school.
The restaurant is still under construction, and they anticipate it will conclude soon. Then, if licensing goes smoothly, they plan to open on March 4th.
Leon described a forthcoming menu item such as French toast made with Cuban-style bread, homemade cane sugar syrup and fresh berries. Another staple will be the Havanero, which is two fried eggs atop Spanish sofrito, yellow grits and sweet plantains.
The mother-daughter duo are excited to step into their own project and provide a personal, modern twist on Cuban breakfast cuisine. Leon spoke with What Now on Tuesday: “We decided it was time to do our own thing.”
A plan review filed with the state last month is still “in process.”
