Jersey Mike’s, the New Jersey-based sandwich shop that’s turned into a nationwide sensation, is opening a Leesburg restaurant.
JM Leesburg, LLC filed permit applications with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation for a restaurant to be located at 10601 US Highway 441. No opening date has been announced.
Jersey Mike’s was founded in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Michael Ingravallo opened a sub shop right on the Jersey Shore’s boardwalk with the idea that beachgoers would relish the idea of taking a well made sandwich to the beach for an enjoyable surfside picnic. In 1975, local teen Peter Cancro purchased the shop with a loan from his football coach, renaming it in honor of its original owner. That one little sub shop has grown, with more than 4,000 Jersey Mike’s open or planned in the coming months.
Jersey Mike’s is well loved for its hot and cold subs, including the Mike’s Hot Italian with ham, salami, pepperoni, and melted provolone cheese topped with grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and hot chopped pepper relish.
Jersey Mike’s is loved for more than its sandwiches. Each March, customers are invited to come into their local restaurant and donate to a charity partner. In addition, on the last Wednesday of March, stores donate 100 percent of their day’s sales to that local partner charity. Since 2011, more than $113 million has been raised for charities and organizations in the neighborhoods that each restaurant serves.
