Waffle House, the favorite for all-day breakfast, is opening a restaurant in Dunnellon.
The beloved chain has filed permit applications with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation to open a Waffle House at 20090 SW 110th Street in Dunnellon. No opening date has been announced.
The restaurant is popular for its homespun, friendly atmosphere, 24-hour service, and delicious waffles. More than that, waffle House is an integral part of life in Florida — especially during hurricane season, which lasts from June 1 to November 30 annually. It’s the “Waffle House Index”. According to Waffle House’s official website, the restaurant, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and has about 1,600 restaurants located within hurricane zones, there’s a protocol that’s used before, during, and after a storm: Green means the restaurant is serving a full menu, a signal that damage in an area is limited and the lights are on. Yellow means a limited menu, indicating power from a generator, at best, and low food supplies. Red means the restaurant is closed, a sign of severe damage in the area or unsafe conditions.
The restaurant hasn’t changed much in decades, giving it an air of nostalgia. The restaurant’s menu is still plastic laminated, the coffee is still served hot, and you can still get a hearty meal for well under ten dollars.
