The Borenstein family founded New York style Bakery and Deli Chompie’s back in 1979, after relocating to Phoenix from New York. Back then, they were just a small bagel shop with dreams of providing Arizonans with the kind of bagels New Yorkers rave about. Forty years later, the family-owned business has five restaurants between Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler, Tempe, and Glendale, with multiple outposts in Fry’s Food and Drug stores throughout the area.
Now, the deli and bakery is saying goodbye to their Paradise Valley mall location in favor of more space — 28,000 square feet, to be exact. The new location, about a mile and a half down the road at 3212 E Cactus Road, will have a market feel, featuring a large bakery, a deli, an indoor dining area, a covered patio, and the restaurant’s very first coffee roaster.
Co-owner Mark Borenstein, who was only seventeen when his family moved to Arizona and founded the restaurant, says the new location will champion the restaurant’s bakery component, with more space to bake both their classic and keto-friendly breads in-house. “We double-bake our breads, cook all our own roast beef. Plus, we’ll be roasting our own coffee and using it at all of our locations,” says Borenstein.
The restaurant plans to close the Paradise Valley mall location in June, and hopes to open the new spot by July. But they won’t be stopping there — with their breads and baked goods on the shelves in most local grocery stores, including Sprouts, Safeway, Fry’s, and Albertsons, Borenstein says that they’re hoping to soon cross state lines. And with what seems like the entire country on the ever-popular keto diet in preparation for summer, Chompie’s famous low-carb bread is sure to start flying off the shelves.
