While construction is well under way for Jersey Mike’s on Arizona Avenue in Chandler, it seems the sandwich franchise’s takeover of the Valley shows no signs of stopping. Duane Layton, who owns and operates Valley Subs of AZ, tells What Now Phoenix that they are also working on a new Gilbert location planned to open in March 2022.
Of the numerous Jersey Mike’s locations under Valley Subs of AZ, three of them are in Gilbert. Now, they are adding a fourth Gilbert outpost to the mix and this one will be located at 3076 E. Chandler Heights Road. With Higley Road as the cross street, this new Jersey Mike’s is in good company surrounded by other establishments such as Taco Bell, Papa John’s, and more.
Jersey Mike’s originated out of Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1956, when it was then known as Mike’s Subs. In 1971, 14-year-old Peter Cancro started working at Mike’s Subs, fostering a real passion for working behind the counter and interacting with the customers. Three years later when he heard his boss was selling the business, he managed to secure a loan and became the owner and proprietor of the shop he grew to love.
Over the years, Mike’s Subs drew a cult-following and in the ‘80s, Cancro renamed the business to Jersey’s Mikes and began franchising. To this day, Peter Cancro remains CEO, overseeing almost 2,000 locations around the world. For more information, visit jerseymikes.com.
