Red Velvet Bakery, a local bakery serving homemade cakes, cupcakes, and cookies, is getting ready to open its first brick-and-mortar in South Phoenix at 6828 S. Central Ave.

After selling her pastries for years from a commercial kitchen, baker/ civil engineer Myesha Harris is ready to open her first storefront on September 2, according to Phoenix New Times. The new Red Velvet Bakery will be located in South Mountain Village along the new South Central Light Rail in a renovated 1940s-era house. Customers can expect delicious hand-crafted treats made with homemade recipes. Richard Harris, her husband and business partner, will run day-to-day operations.

Harris started selling her cupcakes about 12 years ago before eventually making it to Danzeisen Dairy in Laveen, where she began selling treats on the first Saturday of every month and by special order. After taking operations to the next level with a commercial kitchen, she started to try new flavors. Customers can expect crave-worthy flavors such as orange creamsicle, bubble gum, pecan praline, strawberry key lime, and more. She also developed a line of jumbo “dessert brunch cupcakes.”

“That’s when I started doing all these different flavors,” Harris tells Phoenix New Times. “A friend said, ‘You can get a cupcake anywhere; what makes it so special?’ and I thought, ‘OK, I’ll show you.’ I came up with something every Saturday, and I didn’t stop.'”

The new brick-and-mortar proves the accomplished baker isn’t stopping anytime soon. Last year the civil engineer published a recipe book titled Red Velvet Recipes: Cakes and Cupcakes. Once the new cupcake shop opens early next month, Harris hopes to possibly expand into more locations.

“I’ve lived on this side of town all of my life,” Harris tells Phoenix New Times, “and we’ve never had anything like this, and I think it’s pretty special. I want everyone to come and enjoy it — friends, neighbors. I love seeing smiles on people’s faces.”
