Oscar’s Taco House to Say Goodbye to Make Way for New Bridge
Oscar’s Taco House’s last day of service will be June 28, 2025. The restaurant will be gone for good as it was bought out by the city for the creation of the railroad overpass planned at Zarzamora Street. The city bought out the restaurant to build the new bridge, which, according to its plans, will help reduce the traffic issues in the area.
The taco house, located at 705 Barrett Place, was opened on the Southwest Side in 1962. The restaurant is named after its founder, Oscar G. Garcia. Garcia passed away in 1978, after which his sons assumed operations. Alex Pruneda, a family friend of the Garcias, joined the restaurant as a manager in 2014 and bought the restaurant in 2021, making him the current owner.
It remained unchanged with time, which is why the part-taco shop, part-old-school drive-in burger joint still has the classic charm. Every visit to the red building is a trip down memory lane for many folks. The old jukebox that plays music, and the burgers and tacos that have stayed on the menu all those years, keep people coming back.
Oscar’s Promises Its Best Till Its Last Breath
With just over a month left, Oscar’s Taco House will continue to offer its full menu until closing. From the delicious puffy tacos to Mexican combo plates, chicken-fried steak, and fried fish, the restaurant will serve all its best sellers to its patrons.
It will be hard for its many loyal customers to bid adieu to this restaurant, which holds decades of memories for longtime visitors. As per the owner, there are presently no plans to relocate the restaurant, even though many customers have requested a fresh start at a new location.
