Burger Boy is growing with another opening coming to the Greater San Antonio area next Summer. According to a recently filed permit, the beloved burger chain is opening near Marchbach Road at 2304 Loop 1604 S.
Construction on the new Burger Boy is expected to start next February and is slated to wrap up by the end of July, with an anticipated opening likely in August 2026.
Burger Boy is a San Antonio household name and has been dishing out burgers in the community since the ’50s, according to its website. Frank Bates opened Burger King’s competition, Whooper Burger, in 1955 with just $500, and apparently, B.K. was no match for Bates’ Whooper Burger, which stuck around until the early ’80s when Bates passed away.
It would be his son, Carl Bates, who would open the first Burger Boy on the St. Mary’s Strip in 1985. The sign that exemplifies the brand still rotates at the debut location. Years later, an investment group led by Bryce Pohlmeier purchased the brand. Pohlmeier, who expanded the brand into what it is today, still runs and operates Burger Boy locations throughout the Greater San Antonio Area.
What Now San Antonio reached out to Pohlmeier for details on the new Burger Boy set to sit along Marbach Road and Loop 1604 S., but did not hear back by the time of this publication.
The Burger Boy chain’s claim to fame is rooted in more than the iconic burgers; as you can see, it’s steeped in Alamo City history and pride.
“Voted the #1 Burger in San Antonio, Burger Boy has built a loyal following thanks to its signature burgers, hand-cut fries, creamy shakes, and retro-inspired atmosphere that brings a nostalgic twist to every visit,” a press release for the brand’s 10th opening writes.
Burger Boy continues its meteoric rise with its next opening, coming to Marbach Road at 2304 Loop 1604 S in the Summer of 2026.
