According to a recently submitted permit application, Subway is enlarging its footprint in Converse, planning to debut its third outpost in the town.

Coming to 3065 E Loop 1604 N, Suite 101, the eatery will land near establishments such as Reliance Truck & Equipment, a Shell gas station, and Whataburger.

What Now San Antonio reached out to the location’s franchisee, Shane Fraser, to inquire about his plans for the spot, but he could not provide additional information before publication.

Nevertheless, the filing states that renovations to the existing 1,626-square-foot space are scheduled to begin on May 12 and to be completed by October 30. For an estimated $207,000, the project will be managed by local firm Open Studio Architecture.

While the majority of Texans are likely familiar with the international brand, fewer might be aware of how the business got started. The Subway website offers a brief introduction: “The Subway story began in 1965 when 17-year-old Fred DeLuca asked his family friend, Dr. Peter Buck, a nuclear physicist, for advice on how to pay his college tuition. With an idea to open a submarine sandwich shop and an initial $1,000 investment from Dr. Buck, the two formed a business partnership that would ultimately change the landscape of the quick service restaurant industry.”

The introduction continues, “The partners opened their first restaurant in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in August of 1965… [and] by 1974, Fred and Dr. Buck owned and operated 16 submarine sandwich shops throughout Connecticut. But, to take the brand even further and reach their 32-restaurant goal in time, the pair decided to begin franchising — a business model that launched the Subway brand into a period of incredible growth and popularity.”

An opening date for Subway on E Loop 1604 N has not been announced yet. Stay tuned for updates.
