According to a recently submitted permit application, the Pittsburgh-based ice cream and chocolate shop chain MilkShake Factory is gearing up to debut its first outpost in Alamo City.

Coming to 21026 U.S. Highway 281 NSuite 59, the shop will land near establishments such as Jack in the Box, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and Summer Moon Coffee.

What Now San Antonio reached out to the upcoming location’s franchisees, Sernio Levva and Anahi Pineda of River City Milkshakes LLC, to inquire about their plans for the spot, but they could not provide additional information before publication.

Nevertheless, the filing reveals that renovations to the existing 1,513-square-foot space — which will include the “demolition of existing interior partitions, [and] ceilings… and construction of new partitions, millwork, ceilings, lighting, [as well as] MEP improvements” — are scheduled to begin on June 2 and finish on August 29. For an estimated $125,000, the project will be managed by the Charlotte-based firm Interior Architects.

For readers who are unfamiliar with the concept, MilkShake Factory offers a brief overview of its history on its website. It begins in 1914, when “Charlie and Orania immigrated from Greece and opened their first chocolate shop and soda fountain in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood.”

By 1973, the “first factory was opened just a few blocks from the original soda fountain in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood.”

Fast forward to today, and the Milkshake Factory operates a total of 11 shops across Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, Dallas, and Durham.

An opening date for Milkshake Factory on Highway 281 N has not been announced yet. Stay tuned for updates.
