Opening in the former Barrio Dogg space, Fonda del Barrio is now serving guests in Barrio Logan. Created by Gerry Torres of City Tacos and Tour de Tapas, the restaurant highlights ancestral Mexican cuisine with dinner service Tuesday through Sunday from 4:00 p.m.

Torres comes from Mexico City and moved to San Diego in 1992. The collaboration between Torres and Executive Chef Eduardo Baeza spans more than 25 years; both share roots in Mexico City.

Torres intends to roll out a brunch service on weekends starting in September. He said, “Being a part of the Barrio Logan community has been my goal for a long, long time. There may not be a more culturally exciting area in all of San Diego, and we are blessed to be even a small part of it.”

Dining Selections

Together with Chef Baeza and Sous Chef Jesus Rodriguez, Torres will highlight Mexican traditions through dishes such as Oaxacan mole, Mayan achiote, and fresh masa.

The menu draws inspiration from seven key Mexican culinary regions, from the North and Bajío to the Gulf Coast and Yucatán Peninsula. Featured entrées include Mexico City’s Filete de Res Porfirio, Pulpo Sarandeado, Puebla’s Puerco Manchamanteles, and Cholula’s Pollo en Mole de Guayaba.

Salpicón de Jaiba, Mango-Habanero Aguachile, and Dedos de Pescado are featured appetizers. Guests can also enjoy Huasteca Potosina tortilla soup and Pasquaro-style guacamole made fresh to order.

Desserts include Flan de Elote from Mexico City and Tlaquepaque-style Frutas Borrachas, while beverages feature traditional café de olla brewed with cinnamon, cloves, and piloncillo.

Rudy Corona designed the cocktail menu, emphasizing Mexican spirits such as tequila and mezcal. Beverages include Mexican artisanal beers and celebrated wines from Valle de Guadalupe.

Interior Mood

Within its 2,500-square-foot area, the restaurant offers both a traditional dining room and a bar/lounge area. The décor incorporates plants and succulents, evoking the feel of traditional Mexican and Spanish haciendas.

Seating accommodates 90 guests, with furnishings sourced locally, including items from Consignment Classics. French doors in the dining room lead to outdoor seating on Logan Avenue.

The lounge features a garage-style door that opens to Logan Avenue, with barstools and patio tables. Live music and entertainment will be featured in the lounge from Thursday through Sunday.

Fonda del Barrio is located 0.2 miles from Chicano Park and 0.7 miles from the Barrio Logan trolley stop on the Blue Line. OpenTable is now accepting reservations for the restaurant.
