Big City Bagel Cafe, a locally owned bagel shop with a handful of kiosks around San Diego, is preparing to open a brick-and-mortar in North Park at 4152 30th St.
The company’s newest location is set to replace Solomon Bagels & Donuts later this year. Co-owner Kristee Gilbert tells What Now San Diego they hope to open by December 1, providing North Park with a variety of different bagel options, as well as a full menu including sandwiches, avocado toasts, salads, baked goods, a juice and smoothie bar, acai bowls, and a full coffee bar. This is a massive accomplishment for the company, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary on December 26.
Gilbert says the company, co-owned by Jennifer Reynolds, hopes to be open by their anniversary date at the latest so that more customers can celebrate. For those who don’t want to wait to taste these delicious bagels, Big City Bagel Cafe has kiosks set up at UCSD and SDSU and a site at the San Diego Airport Rental Car Center. To get the entire Big City Bagel Cafe experience, customers are encouraged to check out their award-winning Hillcrest Café at the Uptown Center in the heart of Hillcrest at 1010 University Ave. This is what the upcoming North Park location will look like, open daily from 6 am to 3 pm.
Somonon Begals closed its doors in North Park earlier this year after four years in that location. That company will now focus on catering, while Big City Begal Cafe will fill its shoes with various bagels and spreads and a full menu of breakfast, lunch, and coffee options. This location will be excellent for Big City Bagel Cafe, with plenty of foot traffic along the busy 30th Avenue. While a handful of businesses have come in and out of this area, Big City Bagels has a reputation that will hopefully keep them here for quite a while.
