Border X Brewery, a Barrio Logan-based brewery that has been around for over a decade, is asking its customers for help to avoid a potential relocation.
Co-owners David Favela and his wife Carmen have operated the brewery along Logan Avenue since 2013, but according to a recent GoFundMe, they are in danger of having to relocate following the company’s lease coming to an end at the end of December. The company hopes to raise $100,000 with this fundraiser, allowing them to stay at 2181 Logan Avenue longer. Despite the grassroots effort, there’s still a possibility that the brewery will have to relocate elsewhere.
“If we cannot come to an agreement with the landlord, we may need to transition Border X Brewing to another location, ideally in Barrio Logan, where we can continue to partner with our community,” according to GoFundMe. “We believe in our Barrio. Our vision is unwavering: we created a beautiful space and invited the Barrio to fill it with art, music, and culture, and they did! This isn’t about Border X Brewing; we are simply a showcase for what was already here in this historic community.”
Border X Brewing is largely considered one of the best breweries in San Diego, especially after 2020 when David Favela was nominated for a James Beard award for Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Producer. After four years, the brewery hopes to stay in its current home or find a new one next year. Those who want to help the first Latino-owned brewery in San Diego are encouraged to donate to GoFundMe, have a beer or taco, or book a holiday party.
“It’s not just about great craft beer!” the GoFundMe continues. “Border X Brewing has been celebrating our unique border culture in craft beer, art, music, and events for over a decade. Our brewery was one of the originals to open in Barrio Logan and helped support the incredible growth of dozens of small artists, businesses, and restaurants on Logan Ave, many of which are women-owned micro-preneurs. We are a case study of what a community can achieve by working together!”
