CAVA, the healthy fast-casual restaurant that focuses on the growing Mediterranean culinary brand, is opening a new location in Downtown at 1011 Union St.

The company’s newest site looks to move into a new $400 million, 37-story mixed-use project, according to a recent permit filing. The apartment and office tower from Holland Partner Group will have 431 apartments, 280,000 square feet of offices, and 19,000 square feet of retail space. Construction is expected to be finished in the first quarter of 2024, according to San Diego Business Journal. Cava will sit on the ground floor, opening sometime next year.

While this will be the first location in downtown San Diego, CAVA has sites throughout the county, including Mission Valley, La Jolla, Del Mar, Carmel Mountain, and Encinitas. When it opens next year, the restaurant will offer customizable salads, pitas, juices, dressings, and more. The company should have no problem getting customers in its doors with the amount of foot traffic from the residential and office spaces above.

“We saw a lot of synergies between the office and the residential when we were planning and designing the project,” Brent Schertzer, managing director of Holland, tells SDBJ. “You get the crossflow between residents and office tenants throughout the day, so you’re creating this really active scene from morning to evening as opposed to going dark when the office is shutting down. Just based on the form of the building and the way it’s all laid out, that level nine space worked really well as the middle point between the office and the residential.”
