Habanita is making its way into the San Diego mobile food market this month, serving up authentic Cuban dishes with options for Vegetarians. Owner Gabriela Tamayo built the business based on how few options for Cuban food there are in the San Diego area.

Rooted in generational family recipes, their menu includes Chicken Croquetas, Tamales (Vegan option also available), Empanadas, and plantain-based side dishes. Dessert options often incorporate Cuban-style coffee.

Gabriela told What Now San Diego, “We’re fulfilling a niche market, for people who are looking for Cuban food but also Vegetarian options. We have a Vegetarian Cuban Sandwich. We might be the only folks who are doing that.”

With Habanita being new to the scene, Gabriela and her team are looking to build relationships with local breweries and foodie events to introduce their brand of cuisine. Currently operating from a commercial kitchen, they have an interest in eventually serving from a food truck or full restaurant. They now offer pick-up, catering, or you can find them at Mikkeller Brewing at 9366 Cabot Drive in Miramar on Saturdays in September. Keep updated with their pop-up schedule on Instagram.
