The San Diego Padres have officially broken ground on its upcoming $20 million renovation of Gallagher Square, located at 840 K St.
The San Diego Padres are hoping to excite fans with a newly renovated Gallagher Square for next season, which starts March 28, 2024. The professional baseball team has officially begun construction of the 2.7-acre area that sits beyond the stadium’s outfield, according to Petco Park Insider. On top of several additions and improvements, the ballpark will open a new, elevated platform for the Tony Gwynn statue atop the hill, with its own viewing deck, tables, and concession stand.
On top of the new eating option, plans include moving the children’s ball field to the northwest corner of the lot and building a concrete gathering space and sloped amphitheater-style seating area facing the Sycuan stage and a new video board. The Padres will replace the grass with artificial turf and construct a baseball-themed playground with a 35-foot baseball bat statue. Finally, the baseball team will add a fenced-in, off-leash dog park, new bathrooms, a temporary pickleball court, and an expanded entrance on Ninth and J Streets.
“We are excited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Petco Park next season by delivering a new and improved Gallagher Square to our fans and community,” Padres’ CEO Erik Graupner said in a news release. “This space has been a defining feature of America’s #1 Ballpark, and based on fan and community feedback, our renovation will make it an even more vibrant and impactful part of the ballpark experience and asset to our Downtown community.”
