The popular La Jolla dining destination George’s at the Cove is temporarily closing its Ocean Terrace, the upper-level ocean-view dining area, for a significant remodel at 1250 Prospect Street.
The Ocean Terrace, which generates roughly 50 percent of the restaurant’s revenue across its three levels, began renovations on Monday, November 10, 2025. The space is expected to reopen in the third week of January 2026, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The remodel, expected to cost nearly $1 million, addresses cracked floor tiles and general wear and tear from sun and ocean exposure. Guests can expect upgraded tiled flooring, new tabletops, a replacement of the glass enclosure, new permanent heaters, and an increase in permanent umbrellas from four to nine to provide full shade.
George’s at the Cove has been a fixture in La Jolla since 1984, when founder George Hauer first opened the restaurant. Known for its sweeping coastal views and award-winning cuisine, the restaurant operates three dining levels, including a lower-level fine dining space and a second-level dining room and bar, both of which will remain open during the Ocean Terrace renovation. Chef and Operating Partner Trey Foshee, with the restaurant since 1998, oversees the kitchen along with Executive Chef Masa Kojima and Pastry Chef Anna Adams.
The terrace renovation emphasizes open-air dining and enhances the restaurant’s signature sunset experience. A major update was last completed in 2016, which also required a temporary closure. With the remodel, George’s reinforces its long-term commitment to La Jolla, having recently signed a five-year lease extension with the option to extend another ten years.
The Ocean Terrace menu features locally sourced, seasonal dishes, offering a variety of seafood, Southern California-inspired plates, and a carefully curated wine and cocktail selection. This upper-level space is designed to combine culinary excellence with panoramic ocean views, maintaining the restaurant’s reputation as a must-visit destination for both locals and travelers.
