Izola Artisan Bakery, a family-run bakery specializing in croissants, sourdough, and seasonal pastries, is negotiating to open a second location in Coastal North County, following the success of its original East Village shop in downtown San Diego.
While the exact Coastal North County opening date has not been finalized, the bakery plans for a mid-2026 launch, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Customers can expect the same high-quality, fresh-baked croissants, sourdough loaves, and inventive seasonal items that have made Izola a local and national sensation.
Izola began in June 2020 as a home-loft bakery, where co-founders Jeffrey Brown and Jenny Chen baked pastries and delivered them using a rope system during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The business quickly gained attention online for its inventive service model and premium baked goods. The bakery moved to its current Island Avenue location in 2024 and now attracts hundreds of guests weekly, earning nearly 2,000 Google reviews with a 4.8-star rating.
The bakery sells hundreds of croissants and loaves daily, introducing new sweet and savory varieties every six to eight weeks. Popular items include the Wine Poached Pear Croissant, Carnitas Croissant, Muffaletta Croissant, and Korean-style Bibimbap Croissant, with upcoming innovations such as a Ramen Croissant. Ninety percent of business is dine-in, featuring oversized, shareable items served on wooden boards with bread knives and linen napkins.
In 2026, Izola plans to open a 5,000-square-foot dough factory in City Heights to mix, prep, shape, and freeze pre-baked items for the San Diego location and future shops. The factory will support the Coastal North County bakery and ensure consistency across all locations, with potential long-term expansion to Orange County and San Francisco.
Izola remains focused on high-quality ingredients, fresh preparation, and warm, inclusive service. The Coastal North County location will continue the bakery’s mission, bringing artisanal pastries and inventive baked goods to a new community while maintaining the standards that earned its original shop national recognition.
