A brand new globally inspired bakery, Kendall’s Kitchen, is preparing to debut in Pacific Beach at 1808 Garnet Avenue.

The new cafe is set to replace Charlie’s Best Bread, which closed last summer after 30 years. The space will be transformed into a new storefront led by owner Mara Fortin. Kendall’s Kitchen is expected to open towards the end of the year, with a grand opening currently planned for November 17, according to SanDiegoVille. Customers can expect a variety of baked goods from around the world, including Czech kolaches, savory sausage rolls, cookies, locally produced bread, and delicious coffee options.

This won’t be the first time Fortin opens a business in San Diego, having previously owned a handful of Nothing Bundt Cakes in the city before selling the franchises in 2019. Now, she’s focusing on bringing San Diego a collection of baked goods not often found in the area. Fortin and her two daughters, Kendall and Karyn, were customers at Charlie’s before it closed down. Now, they hope to continue the eatery’s tradition of bringing the community together with delicious food and drinks. The ownership team is remodeling the space in its soft opening stage.

“We are thrilled to announce the opening of the very first world bakery right here in the heart of Pacific Beach,” Fortin says on the company’s website. “As members of this vibrant community, we are excited to share our passion for baking and delicious treats with you. Our kafe is more than just a place to pick up baked goods — it’s a gathering spot where friends and neighbors can come together to learn, grow, and be introduced to the world beyond PB. We invite you to visit us and help us create a strong community and atmosphere that touches lives as well as satisfies appetites.”
