Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, a Japanese conveyor belt sushi chain with over 540 locations across Japan, Taiwan, and the United States, is preparing to open a new site in Mission Valley at 1640 Camino Del Rio N #218.
The company’s newest location is set to open in the Mission Valley Mall, according to the company’s website. It’s unclear when this Kura Sushi will open, but it could be after redeveloping the shopping center. When this location opens, customers can expect a high-tech dining experience that blends convenience with traditional Japanese cuisine. In the U.S., many of its locations are found in California and other major metro areas. Its popularity stems from the efficient service model and consistent food quality.
At Kura Sushi, customers select dishes directly from a conveyor belt that circulates various sushi and small plates. Each plate is color-coded to indicate its price, typically starting at around $3.40. Touchscreen panels at each table allow customers to place custom orders delivered via a second express conveyor belt. Most plates include two to four pieces of sushi or another small portioned item.
Kura uses a ventilated sushi lid system with plate-tracking technology to ensure freshness and monitor dish circulation. The restaurant also features an automated plate disposal slot where customers insert finished plates. After 15 plates are deposited, a small prize is dispensed as part of an interactive incentive system. Mutenmaru, the restaurant’s animated robot mascot, leads this gamified experience.
The menu at Kura Sushi changes monthly, with new limited-time offerings to complement the standard selections. Dishes include sushi, rolls, side items, and desserts reflecting traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine. Seasonal specials often highlight ingredients based on availability and cultural events. This rotating menu helps maintain customer interest and showcases variety in the offerings.
