The Mochi donut, popularized by chain brand Mochinut, are a blend of American-style doughnuts and Japanese mochi rice cakes. Mochinut uses a rice flour base, which adds to their chewiness plus their bubbled ring shape lends a unique and fun quality to the fried treats.

The brand is planning a quick expansion across the US, with 20 stores currently open in California and another 20 on their way. As of this month, two new permits have been filed with the city for stores at Main Street Plaza in El Cajon and on Plaza Boulevard at Euclid Avenue in National City

What Now San Diego spoke with management at Mochinut on Convoy who told us the new stores are planned under different ownership than their original San Diego location.

The Convoy shop keeps things interesting with a rotating menu of weekly flavors like Churro, Matcha, Cookies N Cream, and Ube. The freshly-fried donuts are glazed, dusted with sprinkles and special toppings like crunchy cereal.

No word yet on opening dates of the new stores in El Cajon and National City. According to the Website, there are additional Mochinut locations planned for Encinitas, Chula Vista, Del Mar, and La Jolla Village. Look for updates as Mochinut has built an Instagram for @MochinutNationalCity.
