After launching during the pandemic after a shared love for the art of baking, the owners of Pan Y Paz plan to open its first brick-and-mortar in Barrio Logan, located at 1955 Julian Ave.

The female-owned company is hoping to open its first storefront with the help of several community partners, including Via International, the San Diego Food Alliance, the County of San Diego’s Reinvestment Grant, and other local businesses, according to San Diego Magazine. The collective effort is all to bring the bread back to 1955 Julian Avenue, which currently houses the Bread and Salt Gallery. Owners hope to open the brick-and-mortar in Fall 2024.

The building has a much deeper connection to the bread community beyond the name of the art gallery. George and Bertha Cramer, the founder of Cramer’s Bakery, started baking bread out of their home at 1955 Julian Avenue after moving to San Diego in 1886. The business was initially named Liberty Bakery, eventually becoming the first bakery in San Diego to deliver bread by automobile only. The owners vacated the property in 2006 after serving the community for over 100 years.

Now, the powerhouse co-op of female bakers is getting ready to bring the delicious smell of bread back to the streets of Barrio Logan. The company, the first woman-owned baker’s cooperative in San Diego, started during the pandemic through their passion for baking and collaborated on pop-up markets. The core of this group includes Nina Fuentes, Sabine Friedrich-Walter, Elisa Sabatini, Beryl Forman, and Aureny Aranda.
