In an announcement made on June 16, 2025, City Tacos shared the end of its run in the East Village location. City Tacos has been under a sub-lease from J Street Hospitality, which was to run until 2026. However, the San Diego Padres purchased the lease rights and exercised their option to remove City Tacos.

After 5 years of serving the locals, this tough decision has surprised everyone. However, both the City Tacos founder and the community are looking forward to what is coming next. Petco Park is preparing to undergo renovations to make it a must-see attraction for Padres and baseball fans around the world.

Meanwhile, the City Tacos owner, Gerry Torres, shares how upsetting it is that the closure has to be done before the season comes to an end.

New Landlord Padres Takes Over

Home to one of the Major League Baseball teams, the San Diego Padres, Petco Park is a space that holds significance for locals. Now, the San Diego Padres are taking on a major renovation project for the ballpark. The renovations will follow the idea of making Petco Park a must-see attraction for Padres and baseball fans from around the world.

This is why, while the decision upsets both the City Tacos founder and customers, they are focusing on the brighter side. “We were given minimal notice, but it’s hard to be too upset at our hometown team,” City Tacos founder Gerry Torres said. “There is no better urban ballpark experience in baseball, and I believe what they’re doing will further enhance fans’ passion for the area.”

Hopes of Return to Petco Park

While the move is a done deal, there are hopes for City Tacos to return to this iconic location. The possibility of City Tacos arriving inside the ballpark next year is high with the help of the Padres and their food management company.

“Fortunately, the Padres and their food management company Delaware North have extended an olive branch for a potential return of City Tacos inside the ballpark next year,” Torres said. “We’re sad we can’t finish even this season with our beloved customers and Padres fans who have made City Tacos part of their routine going to games, but we are looking to be back and better than ever.”

Goodbyes and Gratitude from City Tacos

City Tacos has shared a heartfelt message via social media to all customers and Padres fans. The post explains the situation and cheers for the baseball team for its efforts towards Petco Park. The post thanks all Padres fans who made City Tacos a part of their pre-game and post-game routine. It also thanks the neighborhood and locals who have supported them through everything.

While the restaurant prepares to close, it also invites all Padres fans to enjoy another game. From June 20, 2025, to June 25, 2025, the Padres’ next homestand is ready to pump up the energy. And with an occasion like this, there is no way City Tacos is going to miss out. Thus, all fans are invited to indulge one last time before the closure brings the end of an icon.
