Salt & Straw, a Portland-based ice cream company known for its rotating monthly flavors and locally driven collaborations, is getting ready to open a new location in Coronado at 1303 Orange Avenue.

The company’s fourth San Diego location is expected to replace Earth Wind & Sea of Coronado. The upcoming Coronado Salt & Straw is expected to open in Spring 2026 and will be located between Stake Chophouse and Better Buzz Coffee, according to Coronado Times. Planning for the store has been underway for approximately three years, and the location is expected to employ approximately 30 people upon opening. Customers can expect the brand’s full lineup of rotating flavors alongside its core offerings.

Founded in 2011 in Portland, Oregon, Salt & Straw was launched by cousins Kim Malek and Tyler Malek. Kim brings a background in business and communications, including early experience at Starbucks during its early growth years. Tyler attended culinary school and later earned recognition on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list in the Food and Drink category.

Today, Salt & Straw operates 54 locations across Oregon, California, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, New York, Washington, New England, and Disney properties. The company remains family-owned and has attracted high-profile investors, including Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer.

Salt & Straw’s menu includes 13 standard flavors alongside five new flavors released each month as part of rotating themes. Popular recurring flavors include Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Salted, Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, The Great Candycopia, and Pots of Gold and Rainbows. The menu also offers gluten-free and vegan options, making it accessible to a wide range of customers.

All ice cream is produced at the company’s Portland facility, with new markets supported by collaborations with local chefs, bakers, and farms. The brand frequently highlights social issues through its flavor programs, including initiatives to reduce food waste.
