After announcing last year that New York City’s award-winning cookie franchise, Schmackary’s, was signing a franchise agreement to bring the brand to the West Coast, the company has identified where it will land in San Diego for its first location.
Previously, What Now reported on the company signing a franchise agreement with Sharian Lott, daughter of Dorothy Smith, the first Black woman elected to office in San Diego. Now, it is clear where Lott will land the first Schmackary’s in the area. The excited franchise owner tells What Now San Diego that she will open the first location in Hillcrest at 1255 University Avenue, Suite B, moving into the former home of Freshii, sitting between F45 Training East Hillcrest and the Marrow. While Lott is ready to open the storefront now, she is waiting on the permitting process with the city, and she hopes to open sometime in early summer 2025. She also hopes to start hiring in May.
This is just the beginning for Schmackary’s in San Diego, which will serve as the hub that serves all other West Coast locations when the company is ready to expand further. This is the first of many locations for the local franchise owner, who tells What Now that she initially hoped to land in La Jolla, mainly for its proximity to the La Jolla Playhouse. She still hopes to open a Schmackery’s in La Jolla. Other areas Lott hopes to open Schmackary’s locations include Little Italy and Mission Valley Mall after it is redeveloped in a few years.
Until then, Lott says she is excited to introduce this award-winning cookie concept to San Diego for the first time. The popular bakery based in New York City is known for its wide variety of gourmet cookies. The bakery offers flavors like chocolate chip, maple bacon, and birthday cake, made with high-quality ingredients. Schmackary’s serves freshly baked cookies and cookie-inspired desserts, attracting locals and visitors. Lott tells What Now that the company also recently started offering crossiants. Hopefully, this will be the first of many new locations for San Diego County and the rest of the West Coast.
