Sourpuss Donuts, a San Diego-based donut concept focused on slow-fermented sourdough donuts made without seed oils, appears to be opening a storefront at 3231 Mission Boulevard in San Diego.
The company recently submitted documents to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality to open in the former home of Ceviches & Beers. While an exact opening date has not been announced, the filing suggests the brand is preparing to transition from pop-ups and market appearances into a permanent brick-and-mortar space. Sourpuss Donuts has built a local following through farmers’ markets, weekly drops, and limited pop-ups. Customers can expect a rotating menu of seasonal sourdough brioche donuts made with organic ingredients.
Sourpuss Donuts currently operates as a pop-up brand, appearing regularly at the Del Mar Farmers Market and hosting weekly Saturday drops at Bivouac Adventure Lodge in North Park. The business also offers custom orders for special occasions and limited holiday menus throughout the year. Its approach centers on slow fermentation with sourdough rather than commercial yeast. The concept emphasizes simple sourcing and small-batch production.
The brand was founded by Renee Fox, a classically trained chef with prior experience owning and operating two farm-to-table restaurants in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Arable and Loyal Hound. Fox has appeared multiple times on Food Network and is an alum of the James Beard Foundation Chefs Boot Camp for Change. She is also a Jacques Pepin Foundation recipe contributor and Cooking with Kids Super Chef. Fox and her husband, Dave, relocated to San Diego before launching Sourpuss Donuts.
Menu offerings typically include sourdough brioche donuts, available in both sweet and savory options. Recent seasonal selections have featured vanilla-bean glazed donuts, bourbon-maple bars, peppermint mocha donuts, and cranberry meringue varieties. Savory items such as Parmesan puffs are also part of the lineup. Pricing generally starts at $7 per donut, with boxes and bulk discounts available. If approved, the Mission Boulevard storefront would mark Sourpuss Donuts’ first permanent retail location.
